Literature and Language ARts 8th grade
Our literature class will consist of a lot of reading of quality novels, poems, non-fiction articles, short stories and anything else we can get our hands on. I will focus primarily on getting students to enjoy and understand what they are reading. We will focus on figurative language which includes metaphors, irony, idioms, and so much more. I will also encourage the students to "turn and talk" with one another to discuss focus questions and to analyze whatever it is they are currently reading. I have small whiteboards for each student which will consistently be used while the students are reading to quickly engage them in whatever it is I ask them to focus on. This could be as simple as listing the protagonist to more challenging investigations such as analyzing what the author's perspective is about a given subject.
Differentiated instruction will first consist of determining the literacy level of each student. I will then target each student's individual weaknesses and strengths. I will work in small groups (guided reading) to target the specific skills each student reflects weakness in.
