Gastronomía - the art of eating good food
We finished this year with a unit on eating healthy with an emphasis on learning about foods from Latin American countries. I'd like to thank everyone for another successful year. Have a great summer and don't forget to practice your Spanish and read some good books. See you soon.
Environment imovie book reports
Students had their first taste of iMovie last week by creating video book reports. Each student has read an environmental book of their choice and completed a series of questions. They then found pictures that correlate to their topics and uploaded them to iMovie. Finally, they incorporated their voices into their movies. Here are some of the final products with more to come.

January Update: The Environment:
The next unit will be a study about the environment. We will look at envrionmental aspects of the earth with a special focus on Latin America. The students will study the factors that pollute the environment and even take action by creating public service announcements using their ipads. There will be much more. A note about the trial we juts finished: I will be putting up video shortly just to give a taste of what went down in the classroom.
December Update: The trial of America
December will culminate with the trial of America. We are trying to decide who is guilty of the death of millions of Taino indigenous people. Students have been broken into groups: Columbus, Columbus's men, the Taino, King Ferdinand Queen Isabella, and the imperialist system. This trial comes from the Zinn education project. The students will be reading the accusations, defending themselves, and laying accusation to other groups. A jury, selected from the groups, will decide the fate of the accused.
November Update - Christopher Columbus
Quick update on our current unit. We are studying "El Descubrimiento" from Christopher Columbus in our first period class. Students have been learning about this discovery from the point of view of a young Taino boy who may have first met Columbus in 1492. We will soon begin a classroom debate or trial with a jury and all. Taken from the Howard Zinn project on Columbus we will look at historical indictments of all the parties involved including the Taino. We will read evidence in regards to the death of thousands, if not, millions of native people from the Caribbean islands. Further updates to follow.
Message from the teacher - October 9, 2015
Good evening,
I wanted to send a quick message about what the students have been working on all this week. Students are researching countries and creating travel brochures for a Spanish speaking country. Students with functioning ipads can use the Pages App to create a 3-sided travel brochure. Students who are still having issues with their ipads can use paper and markers. This project should be completed by early next week. I gave everyone a rubric they should follow to complete the work. I understand there has been computer and printing issues but each student should have a map and pictures included in their project.
About the ipads...some students still have not given Mrs. Colquitt their Apple ID which means they do not have access to some of the most important apps like imovie and Pages. If you have any questions about creating an Apple ID try going to https://appleid.apple.com/account By following this link you can create an Apple ID for your child. Let me know if you have questions,

This school year has begun in a very excellent way. My 6th grade students have been working very hard in Spanish. We are currently working to fill out our Linguafolio which is a self assessment tool for Spanish speakers. We have made sure to stay in our target language throughout the entire class period which can be challenging at times. Please remind your kids to always remain in target language especially during the more light moments of the class when people are making comments or speaking to one another.
Students have earned Epoints (PBIS reward system using our iPads and smartphones where students can earn points to cash out at a later date). Most Epoints in my class have been awarded to students who remain in the target language or shown responsibility.
We have also been reading in Spanish every day! Students have selected books, both fiction and non-fiction, to read at the beginning of each class daily. I will incorporate these more in the days to come. These books will allow students to dialogue with one another as well as work on their comprehension.
Students have also been working on writing and spontaneous conversations which is key for Spanish language learners.
There are many things going on in class. Check back here for updates and pictures of class activities.
